Briefly GloriousBriefly Glorious
She stands, bare-foot,
at the kitchen sink
with her eyes closed.
In her hand, the wet dishrag, forgotten,
drips suds onto the linoleum.
Her body sways, she sings;
her voice rounded, melodic.
Her spirit soars with the music,
reaches toward heaven
and her rightful place in the universe.
She glows with the radiance of
sunlight reflected off dancing waters,
warmth spreads as liquid from her chest
outward to the tips of her fingers and toes, tingling.
Transformed, she is all that she ever wanted to be.
The walls of her soul stretch, ballooning
to fill her with awareness
of her identity; where she belongs.
Here now one with all that is
and all that ever will be.
Strange and brief moment of glory
spirit song and dream.
The music stops,
she sighs, plunges her hands back
into a lukewarm reality.
Twelve Ounce ProphetTwelve Ounce Prophet
You cloak your shame in anger
to disguise your fear
of being alone,
and attempt to drown all feeling
twelve ice-cold ounces at a time.
And it would seem that you’ve succeeded,
except for the self-pity,
and annoying and constant pain.
Still, you repeat,
if only you’d had someone
to quit for, someone who loved you.
Except, you did,
but we were square pegs
and couldn’t be forced into
the gaping round hole inside you.
So, you’re alone.
So This Is Married LifeSo, This Is Married Life.
Our words fall
like cartoon anvils
but there is no humor in this.
Only wasted breath.
You are sandpaper
when I am velvet.
I am granite
when you are putty.
If someone gave us
the instructions for life
neatly printed on a page,
we would only argue over them.
